Grand Canyon University, also known as GCU, is a private, for-profit Christian university located in Phoenix, which is the capital and the largest city of the US state of Arizona, having a population estimated at a number of more than 1 million people, fact which also makes it the 5th most populated city in USA. GCU was founded as a non-profit liberal arts college, in 1949, first opening its doors to 93 students, at its original campus site in Prescott, AR, the university being moved to its present location, in October, 1951, its current name being adopted in 1989. Since its founding, GCU has continuously grown, today, being ranked 7th in the list of online colleges from the Online College Database, offering its students numerous educational programs, in various fields of study, including online and campus-based postsecondary education services focused on graduate and undergraduate degree programs in education, liberal arts, business, and healthcare, through 6 colleges, which include: the Ken Blanchard College of Business, the College of Education and the Colleges of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Athletics
GCU's athletic teams are known as the 'Lopes, which compete in NCAA Division II, in PacWest Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are purple and white and their mascot is Thunder the Antelope.
